A holistic risk-based
approach to
project development

As a commercial project developer, we follow a holistic approach to project development. The technology is just as important as reliable offtake agreements, secure feedstock supply, and efficient plant operation. Our offtake agreements secure the purchase of the sustainable fuels we produce, feedstock security ensures a consistent and sustainable supply of agricultural residue while having skilled operators helps us in maximizing output and maintaining safety standards at our plants.

By integrating these four elements — advanced technology, reliable offtake agreements, secure feedstock supply, and expert plant operation — Jwala Bioenergy energy significantly reduces the risk profile on projects, paving way for investors to invest and effectively contribute to the global energy transition.

The feedstock

Jwala Bioenergy sources its feedstock (primarily paddy straw) for our projects through a collaborative process with the local farming community. For our project in Dera Bassi, this is facilitated by the Reviving Green Revolution Cell (RGR Cell), an NGO under the Tata Trusts umbrella dedicated to rejuvenating agriculatural practices to ensure sustainable productivity productivity and growth

The procurement process involves close coordination with farmers to collect paddy straw after the harvest season. As a biomethane plant is an integral part of the community, community efforts such as our cooperation with RGR Cell plays a crucial role in bonding our projects with the community and educating farmers about sustainable farming and crop residue management practices.

The process is streamlined through organized collection centers and efficient collection campaigns during the harvest season, followed by storage on the biomethane plant premises. The biomethane plant would also supply Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) back to the community. By integrating sustainable practices and fostering community engagement, Jwala Bioenergy and the RGR Cell collectively contribute to a greener and more prosperous agricultural landscape. This initiative supports environmental sustainability, enhances soil health, and promotes economic stability for the local farming community.

The Biomatter

Our biogas projects produce highly nutritious Fermented Organic Manure (FOM), which aids in soil rejuvenation. We are committed to returning these valuable residues to the farmers who supply us with straw.

By using our FOM, farmers can significantly reduce their use of chemical fertilizers. In India, where soil desertification from overuse of chemical fertilizers is a growing concern, FOM improves soil health and enhances crop nutrition, promoting sustainable farming practices and long-term agricultural productivity.

We have also partnered with the Reviving Green Revolution Cell (RGR Cell) for supplying FOM to farmers, focusing on 10 villages, to ensure that the benefits of our undertaking reach the farmers who support us.

Jwala Bioenergy’s
Key Sustainability Impacts

Air Quality Improvement

Our projects play a crucial role in mitigating the detrimental practice of stubble burning, a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants in northern India. By efficiently utilizing 15,000 tons of paddy straw annually, our first project (the Dera Bassi project) prevents the release of approximately 9,500 tons of CO₂, 20 tons of particulate matter, 400 tons of carbon monoxide (CO), and 13 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) each year. This significant reduction in harmful emissions leads to substantial improvements in air quality and public health.

Offsetting Fossil
Fuel Consumption

Each of our first series of plants would produce 1,800 tons of natural gas. By injecting biomethane into the City Gas Distribution grid, the Dera Bassi project will offset natural gas consumption annually, equivalent to the annual consumption of about 10,000 households. This shift to renewable energy significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with fossil fuel use, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions.

Economic Benefits
for Farmers

Our projects source feedstock from local farmers, offering them a valuable additional income stream. Each plant directly benefits approximately 1,500 farmers, boosting their incomes By integrating sustainable practices, we are not only advancing environmental goals but also fostering economic growth and stability within the local farming community.

Reduction in Chemical Fertilizer Use

The biogas production process in our projects produces Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) as a by-product. This is a valuable bio-fertilizer which would reduce farmer’s reliance on chemical fertilizers. Not only does the Fermented Organic Manure give valuable natural nutrients, it also enhances soil health by combating soil desertification as well as improving its fertility, potentially increasing crop yields by 10% and offsetting use of 2,300 tons of chemical fertilizers annually.

CO₂ Capture

Jwala Bioenergy’s plants help improve the environment by also capturing CO₂ during biomethane production, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere. The Dera Bassi plant is designed to capture around 4,200 tons of CO₂ annually, providing environmental benefits and a revenue stream.

Employment
Generation

The establishment of a biomethane plant generates direct and indirect employment opportunities for over 100 local individuals, fostering skill development and job creation, contributing to economic growth in the community.
